Job Description

Summary of The Role

The Credit Controller plays a key role in managing the company’s accounts receivable function, ensuring timely collection of outstanding debts and maintaining strong cash flow. This position is responsible for monitoring customer accounts, reducing aged debt, and building effective relationships with clients to resolve payment issues efficiently.

The role requires strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple accounts in a fast-paced environment. Working closely with internal teams and external customers, the Credit Controller supports the finance function through proactive debt management, accurate reporting, and effective query resolution.

Operating with a high level of ownership, the role requires a proactive and results-driven approach, with a focus on improving collection processes and minimizing financial risk.

Role Responsibilities

Managing a portfolio of customer accounts, ensuring timely collection of outstanding invoices.
Monitoring aged debt reports and proactively following up on overdue balances.
Contacting customers via phone and email to resolve payment issues and secure payment commitments.
Investigating and resolving invoice queries in collaboration with internal teams.
Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of all communications and account activities.
Allocating incoming payments and reconciling customer accounts.
Preparing regular debtor reports and providing updates to management on collection performance.
Supporting the month-end process, including reporting on aged receivables and bad debt provisions.
Building and maintaining strong relationships with customers to improve payment behavior.
Ensuring adherence to credit control policies and procedures.
Supporting credit risk assessments, including setting and reviewing credit limits where required.
Identifying and escalating high-risk accounts or potential bad debts.
Collaborating with sales and operations teams to resolve disputes and improve cash collection.

Requirements

Essential Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Previous experience in a Credit Control or Accounts Receivable role (2–4 years preferred).
Strong understanding of accounts receivable processes and debt collection practices.
Experience managing aged debt and working towards collection targets.
Proficient in MS Excel and experience with accounting or ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Sage, Xero, or similar).
Strong reconciliation skills and attention to detail.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a confident and professional phone manner.
Ability to handle difficult conversations and negotiate payment solutions effectively.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple accounts and deadlines.
Experience working in a UK-facing finance environment or with international clients is advantageous.
Understanding of UK financial practices is beneficial but not essential.
